Il réunit l'orchestre Joey and the Showmen autour du guitariste new-yorkais Joey Greco et du batteur de Vince Taylor, Bobbie Clarke.
Il grave l'album historique et mythique "Les Rocks les plus terribles" dans lequel il rend hommage à Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Gene Vincent...
Il fait un tabac pour son troisième Olympia avant son départ au service militaire, en Allemagne et enregistre "Le pénitencier" ("The House Of The Rising Sun").

Il tourne son premier film "D'où viens-tu Johnny ?" et impose la version française de "Da Doo Ron Ron".
Il est aussi le héros de la fête de la Grande nuit de la Nation où 200 000 personnes l'acclament

Il enregistre à Nashville avec Shelby Singleton (directeur musical d'Elvis Presley).
Premier disque d'or avec "Viens danser le twist" ("Let's Twist Again").
Il triomphe une deuxième fois à l'Olympia avec "Pas cette chanson", "L'Idole des jeunes" et "Elle est terrible".
